This was the scene after a car left the M2 in Medway and careered down an embankment.

The crash happened at around 6.30pm Saturday on the coastbound carriageway between junctions two (Rochester) and three (Chatham).

A woman in her 30s from the Gravesend area was seriously injured and taken to the Royal London Hospital after being cut free from the wreckage of the Range Rover by firefighters.

A toddler was also hurt, but seemed to have only suffered minor cuts and bruises.

Kent Air Ambulance was also at the scene - but the victim was taken to hospital by land ambulance. A police spokesman described her condition on Saturday night as stable.

The vehicle the woman was driving left the carriageway, crashed through the barriers and went down an embankment into Wouldham Road at Borstal, near Rochester.

Fire crews from Thames-side and Medway used cutting equipment to free the woman from the car.

The motorway was closed in both directions after the crash to allow the Kent Air Ambulance to land at the scene. It reopened at around 10.15pm Saturday.
