Kent Ladies were crowned South Region Inter County golf champions last Friday after winning at Hampshire’s Blackmoor Course, writes Oliver Bisset.

The team of nine outplayed Surrey, Hampshire, Middlesex and Sussex over the five-day Ryder Cup-style tournament to win the ‘Top Dog’ trophy 22.5-21 and qualify for the county finals in Cheshire in September.

It came down to the last Kent shot on the final hole of a thrilling competition, with Rochester & Cobham's Mollie Lawrence holding her nerve to wrap up a solid performance all round and give Kent a first Southern title in 10 years.

Captain Chris Daniels said: “I am extremely proud to be part of team Kent. There were some tricky selection decisions to make along the way but the result speaks for itself.”

The win could prove a good omen for Kent, as Daniels explained: “The last time Kent won the South they went on to become English County Champions in 2003. We all hope we can repeat that."
