They scored three times in the first half and had two more efforts ruled out for offside.

Boss Martin Allen changed all 10 outfield players at the break, including a run-out for striker Adebayo Akinfenwa following his midweek return to the club.

Gills went in front in the 28th minute with Amine Linganzi, Chris Whelpdale and Myles Weston working an opening for Bradley Dack, who timed his run from midfield perfectly to round keeper George Howard and score.

The visitors doubled their lead seven minutes later when Charlie Allen's short corner found Matt Fish, whose low cross was turned in by captain Adam Barrett.

Danny Kedwell scored Gillingham's third from the penalty spot five minutes before the break. Weston was fouled by Steven Smith and Kedwell sent Howard the wrong way.

Trialist Harry Grant was Gills' brightest player in the second half.

His running caused plenty of problems for the home defence and it was from a Grant cross that Akinfenwa went close to his first goal back in a Gills shirt.

The big forward got a good connection but his header was well saved by Howard diving to his left.

Gillingham (first half): Nelson, Fish, Davies, Barrett, Martin, Dack, Allen, Kedwell, Whelpdale, Linganzi, Weston. (Second half): Nelson (Gowans 85mins), Butcher, Muggleton, McKain, Hare, Akinfenwa, Haysman, Grant, German, Gregory, Birchall.
