Kent's hockey stars helped England women to claim second-place in the World League Semi-Final in London on Sunday.

Former Canterbury skipper Susannah Townsend, from Maidstone, and Holcombe duo Maddie Hinch and Laura Unsworth were in the side which lost 3-0 to Australia in the final on Sunday evening, though their exploits in the tournament did secure qualification for the World Cup.

Townsend had scored the fourth and final goal as the hosts beat the Olympic silver-medallists Argentina 4-2 in the semi-final on Saturday.

The midfielder's rare goal came at a crucial time, midway through the second half, as the South Americans had pulled back to 3-2 seven minutes earlier.

The trio also helped England to a 3-2 win over Italy in the quarter-final two days earlier after a 4-1 success against South Africa and 1-1 draws against Australia and Spain in the group stage.

Next up for England is the EuroHockey Championships in Belgium in August where they will face Germany, Spain and Scotland in Pool B.

Meanwhile West Malling's Ashley Jackson and Holcombe duo Barry Middleton and Dan Fox have been in action for England's men in their World League Semi-Final in Malaysia.

The trio were in the side as England came from behind to draw 3-3 against South Africa before being held 2-2 by Pakistan on Sunday.

They face the hosts on Tuesday before the quarter-finals on Thursday.
