Welling manager Jamie Day has dismissed rumours linking Andy Pugh with a return to the club.

Popular striker Pugh still has one year left on his contract at Cambridge United but, because he played in a wide midfield role in the second half of last season, supporters were hopeful he would return to Park View Road.

However, Day said that even if Pugh was available, he could not afford to bring back the striker who scored 46 goals in 84 games for the Wings before completing a five-figure move to Cambridge in January, 2012.

"As far as I am aware, Andy Pugh is a Cambridge player and is part of their plans," said Day.

"But even if he wanted to come back, we can't afford him unless he took a big drop. He is on far too much for us as his wage is the same as three or four players for us.

"We're not in a position to take him but Cambridge have stated that he will be with them next season."
