Welling manager Jamie Day has a shortlist of six players from which he wants to replace outgoing defender Anthony Acheampong.

The England C centre-back left the Wings to join Barnet on Wednesday for a fee that will be set by tribunal.

Day said: "We've got a lot of players that we like.

"There's five or six that we are looking at and we'll narrow that down to find the right player.

"They will need to fit into what we can afford."

Day believes the club's development of players during his time in charge will boost his hopes of bringing players in.

Acheampong has become the fourth player in the past two years to leave for a transfer fee, following the departures of Andy Pugh, Loick Pires and Jack Parkinson.

"It shows for us that we are developing good young players the right way," said Day.

"That's four that have gone on recently so it shows that we are doing something right."

Reflecting on the departure of Acheampong, Day added: "I've spoken to Anthony at length over the past four or five weeks. We made him a good offer to stay but I understand why he has left and wish him well for the future.

"I'm disappointed to lose him as I think he has done well for us in the last three years.

"But at the same time, given the size of the club that we are and the wages we pay, when bigger clubs come after our players it is difficult to turn them down."

Welling's players return to pre-season training this Saturday.
