Kent Spitfires' slim chances of reaching the semi-finals of the Yorkshire Bank 40 competition were ended as a power failure handed Warwickshire Bears a seven-run win via the Duckworth-Lewis method on Thursday night.

Kent needed victories in their final two games in Group A and for other results to go their way to stand any chance of a semi-final spot, but with their run-chase finely poised at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, floodlight number two blacked out after a power failure.

Discussions between the umpires and the two captains ensued and despite Kent skipper James Tredwell hoping to continue the game, his opposite number had other ideas and the match was abandoned due to unsafe playing conditions, with the visitors handed victory via DL.

The lights and PA system failed at 8.56pm with Kent 24.3 overs into their reply following the Bears' 213-7. Tredwell had bowled superbly to take 2-19 from his eight overs with another 2-44 from Darren Stevens. William Porterfield had made 57 for the Bears before holing-out to Stevens off Adam Ball.

Stevens also excelled with the bat, standing unbeaten on 42 not out when a loud bang from the Old Dover Road and Nackington Road corner of the ground preceded the lights going out.

Rob Key (7) and Sam Northeast (22) were both caught at close range by Jim Troughton off the bowling off Ateeq Javid while Brendan Nash (24) and Fabian Cowdrey (6) were caught behind by Peter McKay off the bowlign of Boyd Rankin and Rikki Clarke respectively.

Victory for Northants against the Netherlands on Thursday evening left Kent unable to clinch top-spot, even were they to beat Notts in their final game on Bank Holiday Monday.
