Gillingham could soon be back in the market for new recruits.

The Gills need to off-load players before bringing in any more major signings and offers are in for transfer-listed pair Charlie Lee and Adam Birchall.

Southend haven’t given up on signing midfielder Lee while non-league Dartford have made an approach to sign Birchall on loan until January.

The departure of both would free up funds for Gills boss Martin Allen to bring in extra cover to his squad.

Allen, who would be left with just 16 senior players, is happy to be patient.

He said: “The chairman runs a proper football club, as a proper business and we work to what the financial criteria is. I have always adhered to that.

“You always ask if you can have players but the financial people are the ones who decide if you can actually afford them. I certainly don’t sulk or cry, or lay awake at night.

“You deal with it and get on with it. If we can get some more players in, great. If we can’t, great.”

Allen will continue to monitor defender Bondz N’Gala. The former West Ham youngster, on trial at Priestfield, was released by Stevenage at the end of the season. He made a brief appearance as a second-half substitute for the Gills in the 3-1 defeat against Millwall on Saturday.

Another potential signing would be youngster Harry Grant. The former Sheffield Wednesday player was rested at the weekend but played in midweek against Ipswich.
