Elliott Hewitt’s loan spell at Gillingham has been cut short by injury.

The defender was two weeks into a 28-day loan from Ipswich but missed the weekend defeat at Rotherham with an ankle injury and is set to return to Portman Road.

It’s disappointing news for Gills boss Peter Taylor, who had been impressed by the youngster’s energy.

He said: “Hewitt could be out for at least a month, if not more.

“He’s got a little fracture in his ankle, which is an old injury. I think he’s going to go back to Ipswich for treatment.

“One thing about Elliott is he’s a fit, young man who can run around all over the place and you need a bit of that.”
