Kent athlete Kate French will compete at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next year after qualifying for the modern pentathlon.

French went into the combined event sitting 15th overall but produced a fantastic performance, missing only one shot to move up to eighth in the standings.

Now she’s off to Rio to compete on the biggest stage of all.

French said: “I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet but I am so pleased.

“I had quite an average day until the combined event but this is just the best feeling.

“Rio is still a long way off so I will just have to stay strong next year and keep up my good performances.”

French also won team gold with Samantha Murray and Freyja Prentice, who finished 10th and 13th respectively in the individual competition.
