Canterbury, Sevenoaks and Holcombe men and Canterbury Ladies hockey clubs in action in Hockey 5s Championships

Kent teams enjoyed mixed fortunes in the opening weekend of the Hockey 5s indoor Championships.

Canterbury’s men look well-set to qualify for next month’s Wembley finals day, after claiming nine points from a possible 12 in the opening weekend of national Premier Division action at St George’s Park, Burton.

The city club began with a 12-2 win against local rivals Holcombe on Saturday and followed it up with a 10-8 success against Reading the same day - Ben Allberry leading the way with seven goals spread over the two games.

The following day they made it three wins from three with a 5-1 success against Surbiton but they reached the half-way stage with a 6-4 defeat against Sevenoaks, leaving them second, three points behind defending champions East Grinstead.

Sevenoaks are third on goal difference having beaten Reading 7-3 and losing 10-4 to East Grinstead on Saturday.

The following day they edged Beeston 5-4 before beating Canterbury.

Holcs are bottom of the table, despite bouncing back from their defeat to Canterbury with an 8-6 win over Surbiton, they lost 4-2 to Reading on Sunday before being edged-out 8-7 by Bowdon in their fourth match.

Despite being basement-boys however, the Rochester side are just three points outside the top-four.

In the women’s Premier Division, Canterbury Ladies kept their hopes alive of reaching the last four by winning their final two games of the opening weekend at Bromsgrove School on Sunday.

They opened the day with a 4-2 win over previously unbeaten Sutton Coldfield and beat Harleston Magpies 6-2 later in the day, with Sarah Kerly taking her tally for the weekend to five while Mel Clewlow, Dirkie Chamberlain and Lizzie Neal all scored twice on Sunday.

On Saturday Canterbury lost 5-2 against East Grinstead, despite a goalless first half and 5-3 against Reading, having led 3-2 at the break. The day was made even worse for player-coach Jen Wilson as she needed hospital treatment after being struck in the face.

Going into the second weekend Canterbury lie fifth but only out of the top-four on goal difference, with second-placed Slough only a point ahead.

Bowdon Hightown are the only side with maximum points.
