Kent spinner James Tredwell named in England squad for ICC World Cup while Sam Billings and Adam Riley on England Lions tour to South Africa

Kent spinner James Tredwell has been named in the England squad for the ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand while youngsters Adam Riley and Sam Billings will join the England Lions tour of South Africa next month.

The 32-year-old Ashford-born bowler has been named in the 15-strong party for the World Cup in February and March, aswell as a tri-nations tournament with Australia and India Down Under next month.

The squad will be led by Eoin Morgan who replaces Alastair Cook as England’s one-day captain - one of three changes from the squad which lost an ODI series in Sri Lanka 5-2 this month, during which Tredwell made his 44th ODI appearance for his country.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad return from injury with batsman Gary Ballance also included. Cook, Ben Stokes and Harry Gurney are the three players to miss out.

Kent wicketkeeper Sam Billings was named on the 30-man provisional list for the World Cup but was omitted in favour of Jos Buttler and Johnny Bairstow.

National Selector, James Whitaker, said: “We have had to make some difficult decisions to get to our final squad but firmly believe that the 15 players selected offer the very best chance of success at the World Cup.

“I would like to congratulate all players on their selection and wish the squad all the very best. Representing England in a World Cup is a huge honour and responsibility, something all the players recognise.

“There have been a number of promising performances from players in recent series and it is important that this squad continues to develop their one-day skills quickly and players start to show the sort of consistency needed to succeed regularly on the world stage.”

The squad will leave for Australia on January 6 for the tri-series while England’s World Cup campaign begins on February 14 against Australia in Melbourne.

Meanwhile Kent wicketkeeper Billings is in the 15-man Lions party for both formats to face South Africa A in two four-day games and five 50-over contests.

Off-spinner Riley is included in the four-day squad, led by former England Test star Jonathan Trott.

Fast bowlers Mark Wood of Durham and Matthew Dunn of Surrey have been added to the provisional squad announced in October, and Stokes and Gurney have been included in the squad for the one-day matches following their omission from the World Cup squad.

The Lions are scheduled to fly out on New Year’s Day.
