Men's weekend hockey round-up

CANTERBURY'S men were beaten 4-2 after twice leading against Cannock in the Slazenger Men's Engish Premier Division on Sunday.

Jess Dowsing fired the visitors into a ninth minute lead only for Gareth Andrews to immediately bring Cannock level.

Chris Pryce's 18th minute penalty corner strike then made it 2-1 but Andrews netted his second just before the half hour and just two minutes later Andrew Brogdon put the midlanders ahead for the first time.

Cannock extended their advantage seven minutes into the second period when Andrews completed his hat-trick, the goal condeming Canterbury to their 12th defeat in 14 matches.

Matt Harper's side remain bottom of the table with six points, two less than Hampstead and Westminster, and six behind Bowdon.

Canterbury Ladies remain unbeaten in 2008 after sharing a 2-2 home draw with Leicester.

Hannah Macleod gave the visitors a second minute lead but Canterbury were level within five minutes courtesy of Jen Wilson's effort.

The midlanders regained the lead right on half time through Kate Sharland but recent acquisition Helen Grant earned Canterbury a point with their second nine minutes after the restart.

Craig Ross had put Oaks ahead but the hosts, who sit second bottom in the table, hit back to level the scores by the break.

A 60th minute goal from Alex Lockey put Robinson’s ahead and that was enough to seal the points.

That defeat, together with a win for Exeter University, saw Sevenoaks drop to second and a point behind the students.

Third placed Holcombe won 3-1 at University of Cambridge and to retain their position in the table.

Ryan Ravenscroft put Holcombe ahead and Paul Rudd added a second before Cambridge pulled a goal back.

The match was settled in Holcombe’s favour when David Mathews came off the bench, still with a slight calf injury, and hit the third.

Bromley & Beckenham eased their fears of relegation with a 4-3 win over Firebrands.

First half goals from Adam Kitching, Dave Evans and Nick Bluett put Bromley ahead but Firebrands pulled two goals back.

Bluett added a second to make it 4-2 before Firebrands netted once more.

Sevenoaks ladies suffered a 2-0 defeat in the Women’s National South Division against Taunton Vale.

Maidstone were beaten 3-1 by high-flying Swansea.

The Welsh side went three goals ahead on home soil, with a trio of penalty corners but Kirsty Hotson scored a 65th minute consolation.
