Canterbury Ladies confirm Investec Premier Division play-off spot and Holcombe Ladies still in hunt while Canterbury men secure vital win

Canterbury Ladies confirmed their Investec National Premier Division Championship play-off spot with a tight 1-0 win at Bowdon Hightown on Saturday.

Player-coach Jen Wilson struck the only goal from a penalty corner four minutes from time to take the city club 13 points clear of the chasing pack with just four games remaining.

Canterbury are three points adrift of second-placed Clifton with Surbiton another three points ahead after coming from behind to beat University of Birmingham late-on.

With four games to play Holcombe Ladies have a one-point lead in the race for the fourth and final play-off spot after coming from 2-0 down at Leicester on Saturday to draw 2-2.

Nikki Laybourne put the hosts ahead after just four minutes and Katie Long doubled the advantage three minutes before half-time.

Crucially Tamsyn Naylor pulled one back seconds before half-time and Nicola White levelled three minutes into the second half from a penalty corner to ensure the points were shared.

Reading are a point back in fifth with Leicester and the University of Birmingham sixth and seventh, a further point behind.

Canterbury’s men recorded a vital win to keep their hopes of a dramatic escape from NOW: Pensions Premier Division relegation alive.

The city club battled to a 3-1 win at Cannock on Sunday afternoon, just their second success of the campaign at the 14th attempt.

Craig Boyne scored for the third straight game to put the city club ahead after 14 minutes and although Peter Jackson levelled from a penalty corner six minutes before the break, Wei Adams struck to make it 2-1 four minutes later and Francisco Montoya made the points safe in the final minute of the second-half.

The city club remain bottom, with their goal difference meaning they are effectively nine points from safety with four games to play and seven points short of the lone relegation play-off spot.

Meanwhile Holcs skipper Barry Middleton and Chatham-born GB ace Ashley Jackson helped Ranchi Rays win the final of the Indian Hockey League on Sunday afternoon.
