Deon Burton insists there are no hard feelings following Gillingham’s decision not to offer him a new deal.

It had been expected that the experienced striker would be lining up for the Gills in League 1 next season.

But the 36-year-old former Jamaica striker is now left searching for a new club.

Burton said: "Nothing came to fruition and I’m no longer with the Gills. There was a lot of talk and a lot of promises but unfortunately nothing came about.

"I am shocked in one way, after what I thought was a decent season for myself and the club. I was looking to kick on for this season but you get on with it, I guess. I take it as a football decision and you have to be professional about it. You can’t let personal things get in the way.

"It’s a business and it’s a professional reason why they’ve done it. There is no sourness on my part, only disappointment.

"I am gutted and that’s what I told the people at the club but I just have to get on with it and move on.

"I enjoyed myself and I was 100% looking forward to this year and kicking on in the higher division and seeing how we would get on. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen now."
