Gillingham’s interim boss Peter Taylor insists everyone has a fresh start.

Taylor was in the crowd at Priestfield to watch the Gills’ last home game and has some idea of what he has to play with.

But after taking training on Tuesday and meeting many of the players for the first time, it is a new beginning for everyone.

Taylor said: “I have spoken to all of the players today (Tuesday) and it is a fresh start for everyone.

“There will be players who didn’t play under Martin (Allen) who will have a point to prove and it’s up to them to prove to the new coach that they should be in the team.

“For those that are in the team, it is up to them to make sure they don’t take the foot off - they need to make sure they stay in the team. Everyone has got a challenge.

“We had a good training session on Tuesday. The boys were first class and their attitude was spot on. I can’t believe it’s been 13 years since I was last manager here. I had a good year then, good memories and I am looking forward to this little challenge.”

Taylor conducted his first Gills press conference since his return, on Tuesday afternoon, alongside coaches Carl Muggleton and John Schofield, who will remain at the club during the interim period.

“I have assured everyone there are going to be no changes whatsoever,” said Taylor.

“I am an interim manager and so I am here for the short-term and if these chaps (Schofield and Muggleton) help me get some results, then I will be here for long-term.

“Sometimes it is difficult because staff don’t know where they stand but we have cleared all that up and I am looking forward to the work.

“Sometimes it is nice to work with different people because we can bounce off different things and there won’t be a coach in the world who does it absolutely right.”

Asked if he might make changes to the playing squad, in the loan market, he said: “I would always try to do that if I think the team needs it.”

Taylor may well bring some of the loan players back to the club that are currently out on loan. Among those out at the moment is striker Adam Birchall, on loan at Dartford.

The new boss is still finding his feet and will be assessing all options.

He said: “I am not necessarily (going to call the loan players back). Some might stay out on loan, some might come back. Some might want to come back, thinking they might get an opportunity, that’s what happens when you have a change.

“We will look at all that and I will try and make sure we see them so we know how they are playing and if it means we need them, then we will get them back.”
