Peter Taylor returned to the Gillingham hotseat on Monday with only one thing on his mind – winning matches.

He needs victories to get the manager’s job full-time, having been brought in on an interim basis to replace sacked Martin Allen.

But the Gills also need points to stave off the threat of relegation and that’s his immediate target.

He said: “Everyone here will be doing everything they can to improve our league position. We need to make sure we work extremely hard and earn some luck, by hard work.

“I can assure the fans that everyone is committed. We understand football is strange at times when you change a manager but we have to get on with it.

“I want to make sure we are safe in this division and enjoy the end of the season. We don’t want a relegation scrap that goes onto the last game or anything like that."
