Connor Smith impressed against Oldham and Gills boss Peter Taylor is hoping the loan man can show a lot more of what he can do.

The Watford midfielder was at the centre of Gillingham’s best forward moves as he provided the link between midfield and attack.

Taylor said: “He has had to play slightly out of position (previously) and we know he is a three-man midfield player. That’s what he does at Watford and that’s what hopefully he can do here a bit more.

“A lot of times he has played since he has been here, we have played 4-4-2 and he has had to play a little bit wide because we have had injuries to wide players and he has helped us out a little bit.

“I am a firm believer that 4-3-3 away from home is a good system but you have to have the right players to do it.”
