Gills boss Peter Taylor is planning ahead with the assumption that Chris Whelpdale will reject the club’s contract offer.

On Tuesday the Gills announced that Adebayo Akinfenwa would be leaving, having offered him a year’s contract, and Whelpdale is also heading for the exit door.

Whelpdale is the only player to be offered a contract that has yet to give Gills a definite yes or no.

But Taylor said: “I think it sounds as if it’s a no-no. I am planning as if it’s not going to happen and that’s how it goes.

“It’s a decision from Chris. We asked him to stay, but no problem, I understand.”

Whelpdale is understood to be considering a contract for League 2 side Stevenage.
