Manager Peter Taylor believes his Gillingham team are back heading in the right direction.

A midweek win over Stevenage, thanks to three second-half goals, leaves Gills sitting 16th in League 1 – five points clear of the relegation zone.

That victory helped banish some of the memories of a dour defeat to Oldham and the FA Cup shocker at Brackley.

Taylor said: “Certain people haven’t been happy with the situation and I can understand that a little bit as well because some of the performances have been disappointing.

“Some have shown a bit of weakness and we have to be a bit stronger but in the second half (on Tuesday), we have shown we are capable.

“We still could have played a little bit more but there were people trying to get hold of the ball to make something happen more often than not.”

Gillingham face a Rotherham team on Saturday who have made a much easier transition into League 1, having finished runners-up in the division below last season.

They sit just one position outside the play-off places.

Taylor said: “It will be a tough match, without a doubt and hopefully we will prepare well and do well for ourselves."
