Gillingham assistant manager John Schofield writes exclusively for the KM Group every week

We like to give the players variety on the training ground but sometimes you’ve got to keep it basic.

It is important that you are not putting the same drill on all the time and that you are mixing it up, making sure it is fresh.

But at times, like it was last week, you have to make sure you don’t complicate it and you are getting that message across.

Sometimes you need continuity, making sure you nail the drill down how we want it and getting the patterns of play and the choices right.

All that hard work paid off last weekend, with the win at Crewe but there has been no let-off.

We kept working hard, we kept believing and doing the right things and we got our rewards. We just need to make sure we continue that hard work.

It means as coaches we are as busy as ever but we’re not short of ideas and that comes from experience.

When you’ve been doing this job as long as we have, you’ve got ideas and several sessions for virtually every scenario. It’s just about picking the right ones.

You have to make sure you keep the lads enthused but, as I said before, you don’t want to over-complicate things. You need to keep them basic, to the point and so that they can get the job done.
