The damage was done in the first half as Welling lost 3-0 at FC Halifax in Skrill Premier on Saturday.

Wings fell behind after seven minutes when Lee Gregory headed home Adam Smith's cross at the second attempt, Lee Butcher having produced a superb save from the initial effort.

Gregory scored his second on 24 minutes after Smith met a Ryan Toulson cross.

And Gregory completed his hat-trick 12 minutes later from another Toulson cross.

Injury-hit Welling, with player-boss Jamie Day making a rare start this season, had the chance to pull a goal back just before half-time when Toulson fouled Loick Pires but Kurtis Guthrie's penalty was saved.

Welling played far better in the second half and tried their luck with a Guthrie lob before Jake Gallagher volleyed wide.

Guthrie went for goal again before Butcher - arguably Welling's best player - denied Paul Marshall a later fourth.

Welling are ninth in the table following the defeat.
