Newly-promoted Welling were denied an impressive point at Wrexham by Rob Ogleby’s late strike on the opening day of the Skrill Premier season.

Jamie Day’s side went close early on when Lee Clarke had a rasping drive tipped over by Wrexham goalkeeper Joslain Mayebi.

But it was the home side who took the lead on 17 minutes. Joe Clarke’s corner was cleared back out to him and he thumped a superb first-time effort through a crowd of players and into the net from 18 yards.

Welling equalised two minutes before the interval, Joe Healy glancing a header past Mayebi from Jake Gallagher’s right-wing cross.

Goalkeeper Luke Butcher, one of four debutants in the Wings side, made several good saves after the interval.

But he was beaten seven minutes from time when Bradley Reid set up substitute Ogleby, who took a touch before rifling a powerful shot into the far corner.
