Wings handed keeper boost

Braintree v Welling

GOALKEEPER Steve Williams will play his third game for Welling at Braintree in Blue Square South on Saturday.

The Wings had feared that Williams, who is deputising for the suspended Jamie Turner, was going to be recalled by Sittingbourne.

But the Brickies can now keep their on-loan keeper, Chris Lewington, after his parent club Fisher signed Danny Knowles on loan until the end of the season.

Williams has a 100 per cent record for the Wings after keeping a clean sheet in the impressive 1-0 win at Newport on Wednesday night.

Although he hardly had a shot to save, Williams' handling was again impressive on a night which saw Welling move four points above the relegation zone and leapfrog Weston-super-Mare in the table.

Welling manager Andy Ford said: "People were saying that the Weston game was a big one, but we've got the likes of Maidenhead and St Albans to play yet, and the closer you get to the end of the season the bigger the games are."

Midfielder Dan Nwanze is clear to play because his two-match suspension will not start for a further week.

Meanwhile, Welling officials have rubbished internet rumours that the club are in financial trouble.
