Not so nasty Nick Hewer apologises for slating Margate

Nick Hewer at the Kent 2020 event

Nick Hewer, Lord Alan Sugar’s right-hand man, did not live up to his image as Nasty Nick in The Apprentice.

The former PR man who got to know Lord Sugar when he handled the Amstrad account was an entertaining speaker at the business breakfast that opened the Kent 2020 Vision.

There were a few remarks about Margate, which he notoriously rubbished during an Apprentice challenge in the seaside resort. That faux pas led to his being invited to Kent 2020, and he was contrite, saying how special the Thanet town was.

He even joked about coming to live in Kent, but I suspect he will stay in Northamptonshire. He was obviously an admirerer of Lord Sugar, saying his judgement was almost always right. And insisted the great entrepreneur was no misogynist, an accusation levelled at him by women after firing several female contestants, including Kent’s own Mona Lewis from Sittingbourne.

Mona was at the show, by the way, along with fellow Apprentice Paula Wilson, who appeared on an entrepreneur panel with Gerard Coleman (Kent-based Artisan du Chocolat), Alastair Jessel (serial entrepreneur behind the Taywell Group) and Sharon Goodyer of The Cake Bake Company (made the Skoda cake for the carmaker’s ad).

Hewer, who had roomed overnight in the Hilton Hotel, Maidstone, stayed at the show until 3pm, finding time to judge the finalists in the Kent Innovation Showcase. And he promised to return, possibly with Lord Sugar, to interview candidates for a countywide tourism apprenticeship scheme.

Kevin Lynes, Kent County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, spoke after Nick and could not resist looking at his leader Paul Carter a few yards away and saying he had to mind what he said because he did not want to be told 'You’re fired!'

Word on the street is that the two men may not have seen eye to eye recently...
