Business blog - Kent TV

Kent TV. Library imageI’m not surprised that KCC has pulled the plug on KentTV. The only surprise is it was not done last September.

There was a good political reason to axe the web-based service - KCC has precious little money to spread around.

The news is disappointing for Sir Bob Geldof’s company Ten Alps and the employees who have done a good job. They are talented, nice people.

The trouble is they were handed a poisoned chalice. Competing media have never liked KentTV and that sparked acres of negative coverage. Residents complained about the validity of television “on the rates.”

And chief executive Peter Gilroy’s argument that it would save forests of trees because of an expected saving in printed publications has not been adequately proven.

KentTV, for all its achievements, will not be mourned by many. Yet it has shown that good community television can work, given creative talent and enough resources. Perhaps the private sector will now take up the opportunity, and risk their investors’ money rather than the taxpayers’.
