Business Blog: Bob Hope and Tommy Cooper

Maidstone Studios was an ideal venue for the Enterprise
event and full marks to Geoff Miles, the co-owner, for
agreeing to host the event.
He is a former BBC television producer and spoke for 30 minutes
while judges deliberated. He recalled working with the late Tommy
Cooper - the same in life as he was on stage, apparently, “just
like that.”
Geoff told us about how he almost ruined the chances of Bob
Monkhouse having Bob Hope as a guest on his TV show.
He flew into the States to confirm the booking. He spoke to Bob
Hope on the phone shortly after landing, but obviously failed to
impress the legendary comedian. After telling him about the show,
Hope said: “No, I don’t think I’m interested.” The conversation
ended.
It looked as though Geoff had failed. But he rang Hope’s agent
and reminded him that the UK television appearance was linked to
the Bob Hope Golf Classic in the UK and a late withdrawal by Hope
would not impress sponsors and other backers. The press would make
a meal of it, he said.
A few minutes later, Hope rang back, asking Miles to tell him
more about the show, on which, days later, he appeared.
