Business Blog: A curious incident

While nothing much to do with business directly, although it impacts on investment in Zimbabwe, there was a curious incident at a Durban cinema.

The auditorium was packed for the premiere screening of "Mugabe and the White African," the acclaimed award-winning documentary featuring Zimbabwe farmer Ben Freeth, from Sittingbourne. It tells the harrowing tale of torture amid land-grab harassment and his courageous fight against the President for justice.

But instead of the Mugabe film, something totally different appeared on the screen. There were suspicions that Mugabe thugs had tried to ruin the occasion - as they have done across their sad country. But, it seems, more prosaically, that management had mixed up the films.

The audience were given their money back and two days later, most of them returned to see the correct film, with Ben answering their questions after the credits.

As Claire, Ben's mother who lives in Oad Street, wrote, "Thank God it wasn't sabotage or anything sinister. What a terrible mistake for the Premiere screening of the film in South Africa."

Thankfully, the correct film was shown for the next screening in Cape Town.
