It's the economy, stupid
Comments |
The polls opened on May 6 after a phoney election
campaign that was more about platitudes than real issues and the
ways of solving them.
Business was barely talked about and even the huge deficit that
affects everyone - firms and individuals alike - was not properly
covered, even in the leaders’ televised debate on the economy.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown thought it was his trump card but it
did not seem to play well enough to boost his ratings. He is stuck
with what he did as Chancellor such as the raid on pension funds,
which have never returned to their former glory, big spending and
praising bankers in the good times.
The other main parties did not really delve the issues or come
up with meaningful solutions. If either - or both - form the next
Government, they will come face to face with reality. There will be
plenty of pain for us all whoever is handed the laurels tomorrow,
or the next day, or.....
We must just hope that the contagion in Greece does not spread
like a cloud of volcanic ash to other European countries with huge
deficits. Do they mean us?
