Sponsorship deal made at last
Comments |
It was touch and go whether Gills chairman
Paul Scally would accept a new sponsorship offer from Kent Reliance
Building Society.
I guess he was hoping for a better deal and that was why
confirmation was delayed until just before the kick-off against
Southampton.
But Kent Reliance, which also sponsors Charlton Athletic, wanted
to keep the double sponsorship, but not at any price.
Mr Scally is a businessman and always drives a hard bargain. But
when your club is hovering just over the relegation zone, your
bargaining chips are not as strong as they would be if the Gills
were in the League One playoffs. So in the end, they settled,
although only for a year.
Meanwhile, fan power held sway at The Valley on Sunday (May 2)
for the player of the year awards. None of your dickie bows or posh
frocks there. This was an event without pretension but it worked
well.
Charlton's family of fans got to see the players close-up and
applaud as their favourites walked into the vast dining suite.
Players were happy to pose for photos. It may have been a bit like
a wedding reception but everyone enjoyed the informality..
Christian Dailly was a popular player of the year, with bagpipe
music accompanying the Scot to the podium to pick up his trophy
from a fan and Kent Reliance's Stephen Plimmer. There is a great
family feel to the club and it deserves its place in the
Championship if results go for them this weekend, or in the
playoffs.
