Business Blog: Young enterprise means the future is bright
Comments |

Future business is in good hands if the efforts of
teenagers are anything to go by.
This week, Maidstone Studios was the venue for the Young
Enterprise South East Innovation Awards.
Eight teams from schools across the region - all finalists in
their local area - put up a display and then presented their
business concept to an audience of around 100.
They had come from as far away as Guernsey and Oxford, and all
were really impressive. Kent was represented by Hoo Enterprise from
the Hundred of Hoo School, Medway.
Sadly, they were not mentioned in dispatches, despite a valiant
effort promoting their World Cup game and other products and
services.
Most of the prizes went to a team from Guildford High School,
but the overall winner was from Oxford. It was a stunning idea,
with polished execution.
Oxygen created an interactive children’s guide to the city of
Oxford. The books, produced to a standard that professional
publishers would be happy with, and complete with an ISDN, had sold
well. The idea can be extended to other cities across the UK -
Canterbury would be an ideal place - and internationally.
The business can be extended beyond school, and that obviously
persuaded the judges to give Oxygen the top prize.
Interestingly, this year there was quite a gap between what was
offered by Kent contenders and those from further afield. A Kent
company has won in the past, but the lesson is to raise the game
next year if a Kent school is going to compete effectively with the
best in the region.
