Pictures: Maidstone River Festival

Picture Gallery

Thousands lined the River Medway on Saturday as Maidstone celebrated its River Festival.

One of the most popular features was the raft race. The fast race was won by Maidstone Canoe Club's HMS Thrust and the fun race by Trinity Trojans, a team from the Trinity Foyer, our charity of the year. A total of 15 rafts took part.

Musical highlights included the Rock and Roll Bandits - who played hits by Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley - and Pink Floyd tribute band, Just Floyd.

    Hi,

Just Floyd were due to start at 8.50 on the day. They were brought forward to start at 8.15 and ending up doing 1hour and 15min set instead of just a 40min set. This brought the end time to 9.30 which was our original time. So our intention was to fill a gap where another act had unfortunately dropped out and not run off schedule. We apologise if you missed part of the set but even if they hadn't of started early you would have seen the same amount of Just Floyd. The band agreed to start earlier and do a longer set so the comment regarding the blame on us I feel is a bit harsh.

    Thanks

The HRM Soundstages were brilliant. A good selection of varied bands and every one playing when they were supposed to. Not sure why everyone is being so negative about the river festival, everyone knows it gets crowded and a few people drink too much!

We were also at the festival fist the boat fire on Friday night then at 2am people fighting and arguing on their boat, also we witnessed the fighting on the river bank on the saterday night, with two very frightened upset children we moved our boat late at night and was helped by very nice boat owners to moor up elsewhere. We did not seem to have the relaxing and enjoyable time as last year not sure if we be back next year.

Just Floyd were great, definitely, and a gem that was missed by many were the Unlucky Fried Kitten band who were on in front of the Archbishop's Palace at about 11am. Very entertaining..though only MBC know why they were on so early

What a pity people don't read their comments carefully before sending them in. As a visitor to the festival every year from the outset I have seen many changes. There has always been a problem regarding the clogging up of paths etc on that particular area of the river. The answer? Don't go up there! It has always been a problem area with irresponsible boat owners not giving anyone else any consideration. This year was particularly bad with the incident regarding the boat fire on Friday followed by another drink fuelled 'domestic' on Saturday. It is very sad that some people can only 'enjoy' themselves when they are drunk. The River Festival is already under threat Lets not let the minority spoil what is usually a great family day out. Come on everyone, lets rally for the Festival and keep it going!

First and Last time I will ever attend, pretty obvious that there was a 'chav' element there that was hell bent on getting drunk and acting like fools, probably been allowed to get away with it year after year.
The fair attracts the wrong type of people with enough gold jewelry to make them look like an 80's Mr.T convention!
Why not have a boat jumble instead of the fair?
I bought a boat to get away from people like this :(

I am a boatowner and have attended for 12 years, I will NEVER ever go again, there was a small group of Boatowners who were animals, arson, stabbings, drugs, fights, NOT the public the Boats kept very hushhush, we were there . we saw it, The woman that took the photo of the boat being alight was misinformed as well, David Payne of east Farleigh was desparately trying to tow some tenders, WITHOUT police assistance, he was finally helped by other boaters,

Hi, We (Just Floyd)were led to understand that an act hadn't shown up so were given a longer set, which meant starting earlier, Had we known we would have not played the duration of our publicised times, we would have refused to start early.
Sorry for all the dissapointment, we've had many emails about this, and it was out of our control. blame Purple Monkey Productions.

River Festival was great,my only complaint is that why do the boat owners feel the need to take up some of the path with their chairs and barbeques,it makes walking along the path even more dangerous, especially as people are walking both ways

Congratulations Maidstone! What a fantastic day, you really did a good job putting on the River festival. This was the first time I have been to the festival and enjoyed every bit of it (especially the raft race-everyone put so much effort and work into it). Well done and keep up the good work!!

Very disappointed at turning up 5 minutes later than the published start time for Just Floyd to only see 15 minutes perfomance then they finished - did they start early or just not do a very long set?
