Mum's close shave for Winnie
A Burham mum
is losing her precious locks to raise money for a little girl
diagnosed with leukaemia.
Sarah Allen, 36, is having her head shaved in the hope of
collecting £1,000 to send Winnie Martin to Eurodisney.
Two-year-old Winnie from Bull Lane, Eccles is currently undergoing
treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey.
Sarah, who lives in Court Road, will face the charity chop at the
Windmill pub in Burham on Sunday, February 3.
Rather than being daunted at the prospect, the mum-of-two said it’s
the least she can do for a girl she has known since birth and is
the daughter of her friend Nichola.
She said: “When we found out Winnie was going to lose her hair I
thought I’d lose mine to raise money for her. “My hair will grow
back, and it’s nothing compared to what she’s going through.”
Sarah, a part-time carer, will not be the only one facing a
follicle challenge in next month’s fundraiser.
Twelve-year-old Tia Leach will donate some of her newly-shorn
tresses to the Little Princess Trust to put towards real hair wigs
for children.
Men will also be getting in on the hirsute pursuit by having
various parts of their body waxed.
Friends and family have also been donating hats in the style of
Winnie’s favourite Disney characters as she prepares for her fourth
and final course of chemotherapy.
A Facebook group, Get Well Soon Winnie, has been set up for
visitors to leave messages of support.
In an emotional tribute, Sarah described why she is going from
greater to lesser lengths for the little girl who also has Down’s
Syndrome.
She said: “Winnie’s the most amazing little girl you will ever
meet.
“Even through all the chemo where she’s had tubes and lines fitted
to her heart, she’s never stopped smiling.
“She’s just generally sweet natured and an absolutely gorgeous,
gorgeous girl.”
Fundraiser for Winnie takes place from 12.30pm at the Windmill in
Rochester Road.
