Political blog, June 7: European election results out...some time
Comments |
00.09: The BBC
is reporting there is a computer failure at the count for the South
East region. Could be a late night...
Meanwhile, the results from
Medway for the Euro vote are in: Con: 18,502; UKIP -
12,841; Labour - 8,745; Lib Dem - 5,460; BNP - 4,761; Green -
4,283.
So, a pretty catastophic result for Labour there. UKIP vote
looks pretty good and worryingly, the BNP will probably be pleased
it polled more than the Greens and were about 850 short of catching
the Lib Dems. If this is repeated elsewhere in Kent and the region,
Labour is in dire straits. But I guess they knew that already.
23.59: Still no news from the South East Region
results. While waiting, I noticed that Dan Hannan, one of the
region's best-known Conservative MEPs, has predicted on his
blog that Labour could come fifth in the region, which
really would be pretty cataclysmic. Might Labour MEP Peter
Skinner - the sole party representative in the region - be
at risk?
23.33pm: The BNP have won a
seat in the North West region of Yorkshire and the
Humber. Interestingly, it seems as though they polled not
much more than in 2004 but the vote for other parties - notably
Labour - collapsed. In the East of England region, meanwhile,
there's been no change at all in the make-up there. I'm beginning
to suspect that might also be the case in the South East Region
when the votes are counted up. In which case, the main messages
will be drawn from how the share of the vote the parties have
got.
22.52pm: Waiting for European Election
results
I'm keeping tabs on the European Election results for the South
East Region tonight (I'm not at the count, which is taking place at
Southampton). UKIP is reported to have polled well, although
speaking earlier UKIP leader Nigel Farage seemed a bit anxious
about the problems lots of people were reporting with the ballot
papers on Thursday, which in some polling stations were folded
in a way that indicated that UKIP wasn't standing.
Mark Mardell, BBC Europe editor, has blogged
that UKIP is reported to be o course to get 18 MEPs - which if
true, would be a pretty spectacular result for him.
There don't appear to be any individual results in from any
parts of Kent - at least, not that I can discover online.
