Political blog June 22: Will Widdy be a Murray or a Henman?
Comments |
It's a big day for Ann Widdecombe who
could round off her political career by becoming the next Speaker
of the House of Commons. With such a crowded field and all sorts of
manouvering going on behind the scenes, the result is very hard to
call.
She could, like a plucky British female tennis player, make it
through a couple of early rounds only to stumble at the finishing
line. Or she could serve up an Andy Murray-style victory and
confound everyone. She secured a useful endorsement at the weekend
when the Labour veteran Frank Field said Ann was
the right person to clean up things.
I think a lot of MPs are still genuinely undecided and plan to
wait until they hear what candidates have to say during this
afternoon's debate. I'll be posting updates as and when they
happen. I don't sense there's a lot of MPs worried about her only
being Speaker for a year - some say it could be an advantage.

Here's something I've
not spotted before. I've no idea if it is new but it seems KCC is
promoting its internet TV station Kent TV in a
novel fashion by advertising it on mail it sends out. It would be
interesting to know what the financial arrangements are around
this. No doubt someone will tell me.

Meanwhile, it seems that Ten Alps, the company behind
Kent TV, has
some expansion plans. It's reported to be interested in bidding to
run regional TV news when - if - ITV gives up. From this report it
seems that they are not interested in the Meridian region just now
but who knows?

Plenty of people have
commented on the ludicrous decision to redact information that has
been published by the Commons' authorities in relation to MPs'
allowances.
It's not too hard to find examples from our own MPs. Here is a
claim submitted by the Chatham and Aylesford MP Jonathan
Shaw. What's it for? I have no idea.
Was it appropriate? Quite possibly but you're simply unable to
make that kind of judgement from the information presented.
Incidentally, this is just one of dozens of examples - it's not
that I'm singling out Jonathan Shaw.
