Political blog: Could polls spell doom for Brown?

Prime Minister Gordon BrownBREAKING NEWS:

Gordon Brown is facing even greater pressure tonight with the resignation of works and pension minister James Purnell. He has openly called on Mr Brown to stand down, saying that Labour will not win the general election so long as he is PM.

The parallels with the disintegration of Margaret Thatcher's leadership inn 1992 are almost uncanny. Purnell looks like becoming the 2009 equivalent of Geoffrey Howe.

I'll be covering the results of KCC election as they come in tomorrow (Friday) both on the blog and on kent online.

We've reporters going to most counts tommorow morning and will have comprehensive coverage, anaylsis and reaction to all the results throughout the day. You'll also be able to catch up with devleopments on our kmfm our radio stations.

We'll be doing the same on Sunday when the results of the Euro Elections are declared. The results of those won't be known until late on Sunday night but we hope to be posting them as soon as they are out.

**************************************************************************************

I SUSPECT that we won't know the names of any MPs prepared to add their names to the round-robin email calling on Gordon Brown to fall on his sword until after the election results are known, which means that unless he steps down before Sunday, his fate hangs in the balance until at least next week.

Meanwhile, a Kent MP has tells me that the mood at Westminster remains dire, with many who were around when John Major's administration was in its final convulsions and when Margaret Thatcher was turfed out of office, saying the mood now is even more bleak than it was then.

If that's the case, things are really bad for Labour - even before voters deliver their verdict today.
