Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders in negotiations with League 2 defender after Gavin Greenfield quits club

by Craig Tucker
Maidstone boss Jay Saunders is in talks to sign a League 2
centre-half on loan.
Saunders, pictured, wants to strengthen his defence ahead
of the home game against Burgess Hill on Saturday and is also
interested in a player who won the Ryman League, Premier Division
with Billericay last season.
United’s need to sign a defender increased on Wednesday when
Gavin Greenfield quit the club due to his Army commitments.
Saunders said: "We’ve spoken to a League 2 club who are happy to
let someone come in on loan, it’s just down to the player whether
he wants to drop down. There’s also a lad who won the Ryman Premier
last season."
Maidstone are waiting on the fitness of Deren Ibrahim (groin),
Shaun Welford (ankle), Alex Flisher (knee), Tim Olorunda (knee) and
Stuart King (knee) going into the Burgess Hill game.
United are four points clear at the top of Ryman League,
Division 1 South, but second-placed Dulwich Hamlet have three games
in hand.
Meanwhile, Saunders believes winger Ben Greenhalgh could sign
for Scottish Premier League club Inverness following a successful
trial.
He said: "He enjoyed himself up there and wants the chance to
play full-time football. We wish him all the best if it
happens."
