Video: School worker who becomes Anglo Saxon warrior

by Thom Morris

During the week James Wilson is a mild-mannered IT technician at an Ashford school but come the weekend he becomes an Anglo Saxon called Aethelburt.

Ashford Oaks Primary School, where Mr Wilson also works as a teaching assistant, was treated to an afternoon of real-life learning with a mock Anglo-Saxon encampment complete with authentic armour, shields, food, clothes and even a battle.

The 24-year-old said: “I do this at the weekends during the year.
“We’ve just got back from an event in France where we were doing early Jutes Kentish warriors and women.

“We’re here to educate the children on the Anglo-Saxons and the time they spent in England.

“We’re talking about the early Saxons and the late Saxons and the differences between them and teaching them about day to day life and the written language.”

Mr Wilson, who can pay £300 for a sword and £800 for a helmet, was joined by fellow re-enactors for the show at the Oak Tree Road school.
