Gillingham consider running bus service for fans from Ashford

Gillingham are considering whether to run a dedicated matchday bus service from Ashford to Priestfield and back again.

The club want feedback from Ashford-based Gills fans to determine if the project is feasible as they look at ways to attract more supporters from across Kent. With car parking spaces around the ground limited, the club are hoping supporters could be interested in the idea.

The cost is likely to be about £5 for a return journey, but the club are also considering subsidising the service to encourage more fans to take up the offer. They are also looking at the idea of selling spaces on the bus together with a match ticket.

However, before going ahead, the club would like feedback from football fans in the Ashford area to help gauge support for the project.

Gillingham’s marketing manager, Murray Evans (pictured), said: "The cost of a bus to take supporters from Ashford to Priestfield and home again is very reasonable, and we think it could be the answer for us.

"We would like to arrange two or three pick-up points close to Ashford with a couple of stops at Maidstone on route to the ground."

Fans who might like to take advantage of the scheme are asked to email murray@priestfield.com to register their interest with no obligation.

How about this idea; people from Gillingham go and support Gilingham, people from Dover go and support Dover, and people from Ashford go and support Ashford. Stop trying to kill off local non-league clubs, this is no different to what Charlton did to you.

No, not really, pub team fan. Ashford is in Kent and the closest league team is GFC. GFC are quite entitled to target fans in their own county - Ashford has always been in our catchment area, but has never been in the catchment area of a London team like Charlton, who disgracefully tried to real in the gloryhunters when they were in the Prem. Scally is quite entitled to ship in fans from anywhere in Kent he sees fit - his only mistake is delaying it until now, when we are rubbish, as opposed to when we were actually quite good.

    Up the Gills!

sadly the current poor football and entertainmentt on offer is what is keeping the more casual fans away

people will not pay to watch poor football, something our chairman cannot ggrasp, tony pulis said this too at the poy do in 1998, that it doesn't matter what nice ground you have, if you do not pay good player to come and play for you, people will not pay to come and watch you.

we do have some good players for this level, but the squad is unfit, unbalanced, unmotivated and will be lucky to finish as high as last season - so if this truly is our 'best ever squad' as stated by the chairman, who is to blame for them not performing?

Too little too late. Charlton were doing this donkey's years ago in hoovering up Kent based footie fans. They were offered premier league football and dirt cheap return tickets from far flung corners of the county. This is something Scally should have done way back when, instead of slagging off Charlton for taking potential Gills fans.
