Neil Cugley eyes Folkestone Invicta doing the double over Maidstone United

Folkestone Invicta manager Neil Cugley

Neil Cugley says completing the double over Maidstone this weekend would give Folkestone’s chances of securing a Ryman League Division 1 South play-off place a huge boost.

The Invicta boss (pictured) has targeted a top-five finish to give the club the chance of an immediate return to the Premier Division.

Saturday’s home game against Walton Casuals was postponed due to a frozen pitch, but Cugley said it has given his players a useful mid-season break.

He said: "We wanted to play, but it’s done us a favour really, it’s given us an extra week off and means the players get a bit of a rest and can get over a few little niggles."

Liam Friend returns from a ban, Darren Marsden is available and Micheal Everitt has recovered from an abscess in time for the trip to the Stones’ temporary home at Sittingbourne.

Cugley said: "Beating Maidstone in December was the start of a superb run for us. We went on to have a brilliant month which really kicked our season into gear.

"I think at the end of December we were the best team in the league but then we had a disappointing January. Hopefully February can be better and we’ll see if we are good enough. The season is going very quickly, there are only 11 weeks left.

"It’s an important game, if we win we go above them and with a game in hand. It gives us the chance to open up a gap on them."
