Tributes to much-loved Kent comic Dave Lee

Dave Lee as Baron Hardup in Cinderella at the Marlowe Theatre

People across Kent have been remembering comedian and panto legend Dave Lee, who has died after a brief illness.

The 64-year-old, from Canterbury, had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the end of last year.

The illness forced him to withdraw from his role as Baron Hardup in a production of Cinderella at the Marlowe Theatre. He died in hopsital on Monday.

The star of 16 previous productions and a former warm-up act for TV shows, he was also a tireless fundraiser for children's charities.

His Dave Lee's Happy Holidays charity has raised more than £2 million since 1994 for sick and disabled children. His efforts were rewarded with an MBE in 2003.

Marlowe Theatre director Mark Everett spoke of his shock at hearing the news overnight.

He said: “It’s an absolutely low point for all of us. Dave went back a long way in the theatre’s history, was an integral part of the old theatre and was indeed due to be part of the first pantomime in the new theatre before illness forced him to pull out.

'Dave Lee leaves a huge hole in Kent's heart' - What's On blog

“That was a real shock to the system because quite simply, he was larger than life. He was always funny, always cheerful, 100% professional.

“As a theatre director, you’re always looking for people who are reliable and won’t let you down and Dave was certainly that.

“He would always go on stage and enjoy every single performance, no matter how he was feeling before or after.

"He never ever had a bad word to say about anyone, he was absolutely wonderful.”

Phil Hadler, who was a close friend and former corporate fundraiser for Dave Lee’s Happy Holidays, said it was a very sad day for the district.

He said: "I have known Dave since the 1960s when we were in a band together. In fact, he was in the process of getting some of his old group back together again and he had even dusted off his old drum kit.

"Dave was never really the same after losing his wife Linda three years ago obviously with a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, his prognosis wasn’t great.

"But he recently had a visit from a couple of close friends - comedians Bradley Walsh and Joe Pasquale - who took him out for the day which perked him up."

He added: "His charity raised more than £2 million over the last 14 years and helped thousands of kids.

"It’s difficult to imagine the charity without Dave but I am sure it will be kept going for a while because we have already paid for the holiday homes in Camber Sands for the coming year.

"I also hope that his adult show at The Marlowe will still go ahead in May and I have no doubt the stars of comedy who knew Dave well will be queuing up to take part."

Dave was due to be made a Freeman of the City of Canterbury at the end of this month.

Now a concert being held in Folkestone later this month will honour the comic.

The charity gala night been organised at the Tower Theatre in Folkestone on Sunday January 29.

It has been organised by the Kent Police social club at Folkestone Police Station and it had been hoped that Dave would be able to attend.

The evening will still go ahead in Dave's honour, and there will be performances by Alvin Stardust and his band, Chas Hodges (from Chas & Dave fame), singer/songwriter John Allen, Richard Digance and rock violinist Victoria Yellop.

Elsewhere, Gills boss Paul Scally has paid tribute to Dave, who had appeared at countless Player of the Year awards at Priestfield stadium and was involved in many of the club’s fundraising events

Dave was a much loved Patron of the Woodchurch (formerly East Kent) Animal Centre owned by the RSPCA Isle of Thanet Branch. His sense of fun and obvious love of animals endeared him to all of us who met him. He will be sadly missed but his memory will always stay with us. Our deepest condolences to his family in their untimely loss.

You made everyone who met you feel 10 feet tall. Ever since your days at TVS your energy and vivacity made me smile. Whether bumping in to you down a corridor at work, on the golf course or making such a fuss of my kids at your panto -life was never a rehearsal.

Dave i came in from being out with friends to see my mum and dad both with tears in their eyes to tell me you had passed on. I couldn't believe it, theres no words to describe how much of a legend you are. Especially when at the end of a panto you would make dad stand up or shout out to him and make sure everyone was watching him before telling the crowd he was a ryder cup tour pro and making everyone applaud him. Ha you used to have me in hysterics while dad was embarrassed beyond belief! Ben was distraught when he found out but hes ok now. So am i and mun and dad. We have all recognised that your now where you've always wanted to be. With Linda. God Bless You Dave. Even in death you have me laughing.
    RIP Dave Lee & Linda

What sad news! I appeared in Annie at the Marlowe with Dave in March 2005, He was so much fun to work with and he was so lovely to my 16 year old dog, Stripe, who was also appearing in the show. We shared dog biscuits as he brought his dog in to appear to. I will treasure the photo I have of him holding Stripe. I am at present teaching in Doha, Qatar and have just read this news online, just so devastated. A man that has done so much for so many. Such a loved person, Thank You Dave, you certainly are a legend and will never be forgotten, RIP DAVE.

Dave and I had been good friends for many years. He was fantastic to work with and I have wonderful memories of our time together in Annie at The Marlowe in Canterbury when he played Daddy Warbucks to my Miss Hannigan. Not only was he a great performer but a very special person who did so much for charity. He was loved by all who knew him and it is a great shame he has been taken from us so early. I shall miss him a great deal.

Dave was a fantastic accoutrement to the yearly panto down in Canterbury, and his name was always shared in equality with whomever was headlining the event.

His comedy, both great for the kids and low-brow enough to catch the attention of the adults, was a welcome addition to each year's show, and his cheeky-chappie persona was larger than ever on stage - where he seemed a natural fit.

His charity work will continue to thrive, I have no doubt, and Kent has certainly lost one of its memorable personalities.

For now, Dave, your immortality will live on with the Bench, and the long-chimed phrase:

"Well, we'll have to do it again then, won't we... whoops!"

    Take care, dear friend.

Its a pity we wont be able to have the reunion we spoke about last April.
Although I have been away from Canterbury a long time,my favourite conversation pieces are always about the antics us Apprentice Plumbers got up to in order to get away from work so that we could play our gigs.
Dave i'll miss you, God Bless and rest in piece.

You can't think of Dave Lee without smiling.

I was lucky enough to share the last few summers with him on the Lashings tour, to say that he wasn't a cricket fan would be an understatement, he just didn't get it! His commentary, like everything else he toched was legendary! I would often be reduced to fits of laughter!

Great comics are loved, he was truly loved, He just had funny bones.

A true gentleman, professional and the greatest company! A big man, with a bigger heart.

    RIP Legend.

I was devastated to hear that panto and comedy legend, and tireless charity worker, Dave Lee has died.

I had the pleasure of working with onstage Dave Lee during the 2007 performance of The Jungle Book at the Marlowe Theatre. Dave was the best
Baloo the Bear I have ever seen in the role - fun, funny, energetic and enthusiastic. His enthusiasm was contagious, and we all had a great time
when he was onstage. Backstage he was friendly and chatty - the kids all loved him, and the adults found a friend.

The next time I got to work with him was during Peter Pan at the Marlowe Arena, this time I was front of house, but I still managed to see him a lot, as he would always pop out from his dressing room between shows for a chat and a joke - half-made up and in his dressing gown!

Bless you, Dave, you made my time at the Marlowe one I will never forget. Rest in peace, mate, but if I know you, you'll be organising shows and trips for the kids up in heaven.
