Andy Pratt thrilled to see Canterbury Rugby Club win National 3 London & South East and Kent Cup double

Andy Pratt

Andy Pratt revealed that when he took over as Canterbury Rugby Club’s head coach in May he could not imagine his side claiming the double in his first season in charge.

The city club secured their second silverware of the campaign after beating Westcombe Park 22-14 in the Kent Cup final on Sunday, adding to their imperious National 3 London & South East triumph. Pratt admitted: "We had a few drinks after but it was a Sunday night and we didn’t go mad.

"We did most of our celebrating after winning the title and we have got our May ball in a couple of weeks which will be our end-of-season bash, so we have still got some celebrating to look forward to." He added: "I have to say, a year ago, I don’t think I foresaw the season going as it did, winning the double.

"When we sat down and looked at the fixture list, we had all our main rivals away from home in the run-up to Christmas. We thought if we could get out with just a couple of defeats by the New Year then we would be in the mix but as it turns out, we went and won them all."

Pratt (pictured) has a meeting this week with club officials to look towards assembling his squad for next season.

He said: "This season was good for the club in a lot of ways. It raised the profile on the field and we’ve had success at lower levels, too – it has all heightened interest in the club.

"There are far more demands on your squad in National 2 South, not just more games and more travelling but it’s a higher standard, too.

"We want to consolidate. Being champions is not the target immediately but it hopefully will be within a few years."
