Trains delayed by ice - again!

A Southeastern class 375 train near Canterbury

It has been a day of fresh misery on Kent's railways, with all trains cancelled between several towns in the county after an icy evening.

Trains from Ashford to Folkestone and Dover were cancelled in the morning after another overnight freeze, while buses have been serving Sheppey.

Services from Ashford International to London were reduced to a limited number of trains to St Pancras and many other trains were delayed.

A spokesman for Southeastern said: "Ice is still affecting the conductor rails on the tracks and it is better to cancel services rather than leave people stranded between stations."

Southeastern provided a shuttle service from Ashford to Maidstone but the Ashford to Canterbury East trains were running as normal.

As of 6pm:

  • Buses replace trains between Sheerness and Sittingbourne
  • Long delays after a signalling problem near Orpington, but trains are calling there and at Sevenoaks again
  • Several trains to and from Cannon Street cancelled

Passengers should log on to Southeastern's website for updated information.

Yesterday's running of a Saturday service on a Tuesday attracted provoked much debate on the KentOnline message boards here.

One group of passengers became so fed up with the timetable changes and the impact of the weather, they launched a petition on the 10 Downing Street website, here.

What do you think?

If you can call this a railway service...

It has been +5*c in West Malling today and five days since the snow fell. How can Southeastern not have trains running? This is the 21st century! Moreover, take a look at the FAQs on Southeastern's website to see how much they value their customers. Every suggestion and criticism is met with a negative response. So much for competition on our privatised railways! I say let us find out how to kick Southeastern off of our Kent franchise!

    Petition to restore pre-December timetable

Was this the petition that was mentioned above?

    http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/southeasternfail/

It calls on Southeastern to restore frequencies and timings to the pre-December times.

I suspect that the new timetable and it's robustness has been a partial cause these past few days.

Let's face facts - in most places in east Kent it hasn't snowed for six days and temperatures were above 5C today, yet Southeastern is still a disaster zone!
