Defiant race row councillor refuses to resign

Jack Woodford

Three leading councillors have called for the resignation of a colleague accused of making racist remarks on Facebook.

And the explosive comments by Cllr Jack Woodford will now be investigated internally by Ashford Borough Council.

Ashford Mayor John Holland, deputy leader Paul Bartlett and Cabinet member Neil Bell have all demanded Cllr Woodford steps down after he told an Asian man to "get back to washing dishes in a curry house".

Cllr Woodford has refused to resign but is prepared to apologise. On Friday afternoon he said: "I am not resigning. I was elected by the people of Wye and my responsibility is to them.

"It was a foolish mistake and I regret it. I should have bitten my tongue. I would like to apologise completely to the people of Wye for the embarrassment I have caused, to the people of Ashford and to the council."

Cllr Woodford, a farmer and Ashford Independent group member, had been for several months contributing to Facebook's Stop the BNP debate. He posted his remarks on June 18 as tempers had risen in the exchange and British-born Nunu Amin had called him a racist and used swear words against him.

He lashed out to Mr Amin: "Just get back to washing dishes in whatever curry house you work in. Have you thought of emigrating back to India or Pakistan?"

Cllr Woodford has stressed he is not racist, does not support the BNP and had voted for UKIP when the far right party won seats in the Euro Elections in June.

Ashford Borough Council said its Code of Conduct for members only applies when they are acting in an official capacity and Cllr Woodford's comments were not made in those circumstances.

But it is still referring the matter to its standards committee "for further consideration".

Are you missing the point here? It makes no difference if the ordinary man on the street made those comments.
The fact that he is an elected representative AND made those comments is whats unacceptable.
Nothing to do with freedom of speech and political correctness.
Now where's that study that correlates racism with a low IQ....

    Free Speech

Whist standing up for the right to free speech is very admirable, what about this poor asian chap's right to live in a society free from racial disrimination and being hit with these appaling old-fashioned sterotypes. If this councillor feels it is appropriate to behave in this way then he is not fit for the position of trust and privelige in which he has been placed. What relevance did his race have on their disagreement? nothing. Racism is never acceptable.

    rant over.

What a pity we have to be so careful what we say these days. This once lovely welcoming christian country is now being ostacised for it's old fashioned values.

    De-brainwashing

If multiculturalism is so great come and live in any inner city borough then tell me the BNP are not right. It is more than apparent that those who are most opposed to the BNP have no idea what the consequences of multiculturalism really are. If you think it is so wonderful then live in Peckham. Don't preach multiculturalism from your gated suburban white communities!

    Racist Comments

Standing as an independent councillor whilst secretly pursuing a right wing agenda is morally abhorrent. Mr Woodford should resign and stand for re-election as a BNP candidate, then we would really see what good people of Wye thought of his views.
As for this comments section, it makes me ashamed to be a Kent resident. Am not normally one for finger pointing and name calling, but perhaps Keith and his ilk should crawl back to the dark ages from where they came, taking their beloved Mr Woodford with them.

I'm sorry but the comments on this page are disgusting - this is why we end up with "Big Brother" etc because half minded idiots can't keep thier racist opinions to themselves.

I've no idea how anyone can support him, yet alone want councillors like him where they live.

Tom. Of course you are allowed to say whatever you want. He has - and now must suffer the ignominy that comes with the crass stupidity he's offered on a public forum.

It IS a racist statement, provoked or not, and excusing such behavior says more about you than you realise. He should go.

Ah!!! The thought police have been at it again. You are not allowed to say what you think anymore, or else they play the race card.Have a row with a white english man and its a row. but if you have a row with a non white or a non englishman, it racisism. Those who think otherwise have been brainwashed into thinking differently.
Good for Jack for not backing down to the thought police.

it doesn't matter what was said to provoke him, what matters is that Jack Woodford has revealed himself to be someone who believes that black and Asian people are of less worth, and that it is acceptable to consider evicting a British citizen from the country because they are of black or asion origin. Frankly it's disgusting and he should be barred from public office immediately

    Fuss about nothing

Racism laws were designed to prevent people being sent to death camps, not to prevent peoples' delicate feelings being offended.

I am offended by over a hundred things I see every day, but no one rushes in to prevent my feelings being hurt. Play the race card though, and the law will bend over backwards to accommodate you.

This comment was obviously made in the heat of an ongoing row between the two people. One of them plays the race card and all bets are off. Like someone else said, we don't know what the other guy said to provoke him.

If it was racist in the first place, we probably wouldn't hear about it because, as we all know, it's impossible be racist to white Englishmen as they're fair game, right?

    Heat of the moment? Whatever

Er, Anon, I don't think you'll find lorry-driving is a particularly stereotypical job for a white man. Fish and chip shop would be a better comparison, if Cllr Woodford's racist logic is to be followed.

Cllr Woodford made a direct link between Mr Amin's race and curry houses - as though that was his likeliest profession - and that is without doubt racist. You can't explain that away as 'heat of the moment'

He also insinuated that Mr Amin has no education. I'd like to see him say that to the asian doctor who might be treating him one day...
