Lights out in Dartford

Take a look at the toll-free crossing earlier this afternoon.

Charges have been reinstated at the Dartford Crossing following a power cut which left large parts of Dartford in darkness.

The barriers at the tolls came up at 10.30am after power shortages overnight left several booths inoperable.

The tolls were out of action for several hours into the late afternoon.

A Highways Agency Spokesman said: "The Highways Agency has resumed the collection of charges at the Dartford - Thurrock River Crossing using an alternative power supply."

EDF Energy engineers have worked since yesterday to restore power to thousands of Kent homes.

But tens of thousands of homes are still without a supply.

For the latest from EDF visit their website by clicking here.

It follows a fire which caused serious damage to high voltage electricity cables in the Dartford area at lunchtime yesterday.

This led to a loss of electricity supplies to 100,000 customers at its peak - stretching across the Dartford, Crayford, Bexleyheath, Erith, and Orpington areas.

Four major electricity circuits have been badly damaged, as well as a cable bridge over Dartford Creek.

Now police are investigating the possibility the fire was started by unauthorised personnel interfering with the cables.

Littlebrook Power station

Power is now being temporarily restored - on a rota basis!

A spokesman said: "We aim to supply areas including parts of Crayford, Bexleyheath and Erith in this way.

James Barber of EDF speaks to kmfm's Susan Hilder about the power cuts

"Unfortunately the alternative supply is not capable of providing sufficient power to all our customers at the same time, nor will we be able to provide power to all affected areas in this way."

The spokesman said power had now been restored to a third of customers, with rota connections providing temporary supplies to more customers.

A full service is not expected before tomorrow, but EDF has apologised for the problems.

For information on rota connections and on the latest estimates for restoration of supplies, contact EDF's emergency contact centre on 0800 028 0247.

On behalf of the police, Chief Inspector Peter Ayling said an investigation had been launched into the cause of the fire.

He said: “We are working closely with Kent Fire and Rescue Service fire investigators and other partners to minimise the risk and disruption to the community.

“However, extensive fire damage has been caused to a cable tower which in turn has impacted heavily on both local businesses and residents."

Andrew Parkinson, general manager at Bluewater, said: "Despite power cuts in the local area, Bluewater has not been affected and has seen a very busy day with many guests bringing their families down to enjoy lunch outside.

"Guests have also been taking advantage of using the new Blue Lagoon and Summer Park, packed with new activities for all the family including trail explorers cycle and kart hire, a carousel, childrens play area and a new beach installed just for the summer".

I have been in discussion for a few days over the £50 goodwill gesture. Apparently this will only affect about 20% of the people affected as it is only for people who were without electrictiy for more than 24hours continoulsy from 13:00 on monday. EDF maintina that this is not there issue as it was vandalism. I have not read anywhere or heard any confirmation from the police that they have finally concluded this to be the case. In fact i thought there investigation was ongoing. why is it EDF have just emaile me and stated "Thank you for your e mail. This was not a fault on our distribution network. It was due to vandalism. In these extraordinary circumstances we do not have to make a payment. That is why we are making a goodwill gesture."

very convenient for them i think.

In earlier emails they state that in the "terms of connection" vandalism isn't covered. I dont recall signing these terms of connection as my supplier is british Gas and i guess they sign this on my behalf

    EDF Play Fair!

Whilst I applaud the work that the EDF engineers and staff put in to restore our power, I must comment on the lack of information and the comment of EDF that it will not pay out for interuption to service. I am a small business that works from home. we were without power from 12.45 on Monday until 6 am Thursday. As my work is virtually all done on computer this affected me greatly. In all with loss of earnings and loss of food this will have cost me over £1000.00 which is a large amount for a small business, yet I am told I can get no compensation at all. Whilst I agree that the outage was not EDF's fault, it wasn't mine either. EDF charge us for supplying energy, if they fail to supply, whatever the reason they must be liable. I will be consulting legal colleagues to see if this needs to be tested in court, and will post the outcome.

We too have lost food, but we are not complaining, because it was not EDF's fault.

    a catalogue of utter incompetance

We have every right to moan, we pay for a service and are entitled to its supply. edf has provided over the last 4 days inadequate, sketchy updates at best. Let's take what I think, excepting for peple with babies or the elderly, someone with electricity only supply to their home, and who is on holiday from work at this time. That means, as in my case, that there is no electricity to seek out info online, nor for radio, the only contact to the world is by phone. Their information line provided skant information. The poor design of edf's network running 4 cables over a vulnerable bridge is idiotic. The slow provision of back-up generators. The continual changing of estimates of when normal power would be available. The lack of provision of information regarding compensation. Conclusion: poor management, lack of adequate contingency cover, poor customer care. All equals incompetance. There should be a public enquiry. Contact your MP now and demand one!

My power at work went out at half 12 monday lunchtime. My shop has been without power and closed til this morning and at home i have had absolutely no power whats so ever - not even the 3 hour doses they are giving people. Me and my boyfriend have two young boys to feed, so instead of moaning and getting angry we went up my parents or his dads who both had electric, its no big deal!! Just gotta make the best out of what we have got!! The only thing that annoys me is my flat still has none of its own power and we have a huge generator outside out bedroom window, of which at night is a pain as it sounds like a helicoptor outside, but at least we got power. Then you got all the young teenagers that are bored at night and have tried to damage the generator - have these kids nothing better to do?! We had police petrolling all around the flats all night!!

Well, I finally have power after a whole 56 hours without, We were not lucky enough to get rations during the power cut,.. after reading through all the comments with people saying we are moaning, not moaning etc, I would just like to say that for the most of us, healthy, young people, we survived it easily, ( driving to other towns, visiting family/ friends with power, and sitting in the garden with a bbq?) But what most of us were trying to say, is that we lost food that we struggled to pay for in the first place, for some in flats etc, lifts were out, emergency lighting was out, ( not fun with kids/ pushchairs etc ) for the people on all electric, no means of getting hot drinks, cooking etc, yes we could all go to a cafe for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but its more money, petrol etc, no hot water for washing, those with babies, try strelising bottles/ making bottles up, and finally for the sick, disabled and elderly, what about stair lifts, bed hoists, etc, unfourtanlly we all live in a world where we only care about ourselves, so i dont suppose many of us bothered to check in on the elderly/ sick and disabled?... Im lucky i can claim on my house insurance, and i will/ have survived this!! .... Just a worrying thought though, how rubbish was the security on this site that allowed this to happen??,.. and on the news, wow they now have 3 padlocks, ( although they probably removed 2 of them after the film crews left??),... is it easier to blame " vandals" than thieves tring to steel copper/ lead, or the lax security measures that are in place??.... Edf make millions in profit by overcharging us all for gas/ electric, would it really hurt them to pay out for those that are in need??

Goodness, what has happened to the spirit of this country? A few hours loss of powert and people can't even think how to feed their children! It's summer have a salad or a barbecue - build a bonfire and have a campfire meal. Reading books and talking to each other also used to be a favoutite pastime. Goodness whatever happened to the wartime spriti in this country?

    Greedy Power Companies

So the entire power feed for 60,000 homes goes across one cable bridge with no backup, CCTV or manned guarding? Great! Could life be made any easier for terrorists? Spare capacity costs money I suppose and that might eat into the shareholders dividends! The vanadlism claim conveniently gets them out of compensation. Two broken locks? Is that all the evidence? Sure it isn't lack of maintenance???

    No mention of Dartford....
Still no clearer on knowing when we can expect power - it just astounds me that we are expected to go 1, 2 or 3 days with now electric (thank goodness for gas cooking though with all food gone to ruin there isn't anything to be cooked!)
Will we be able to claim back for all food gone bad?

    EDF

How nice of you to tell us there is a rota system for power, not that it's of much use to people at work.

It's not as if EDF have posted anything on their website other than to shift the blame onto a few hoodies with a set of bolt cutters.

    Power Outtage

Unfortunately "In this day and age" there is still no magic wand to enable instant repairs to a fire damaged installation, AND the laying and jointing of a fluid filled high voltage power cable.

Blame the idiots who vandalised it. EDF engineers are highly competant, and will repair the network as soon as is practically possible.
