Funding crisis for Canterbury's homeless charity, the Scrine Foundation

Exclusive by Gerry Warren  Funding crisis for Canterbury-based Scrine Foundation

A charity which helps to look after homeless people in Canterbury has been plunged into a funding crisis which trustees say could force it to close in October.

All 66 full and part-time staff working for the Scrine Foundation have been put on notice of losing their jobs.

The crisis follows the county council’s decision to withdraw three service contracts worth nearly £600,000 from the Foundation because, it claims, quality standards were being failed.

Scrine's Board of Trustees said in a statement that it refuted the alleged breaches and planned to appeal against the KCC’s decision.

Chairman James Walker said: “The closure of the only night shelter in Kent would, I believe, be catastrophic for homeless people in the county.”

KCC senior manger for the scheme, Caroline Highwwood said: “We have been working with the Scrine Foundation for about a year to resolve the issues but there has not been the improvements we required and we have a responsibility to ensure that tax payers’ money is spent responsibly."

The trustees, county council and city council are due to meet  on Friday.

I assume that KCC are busy making provisions for the large number of Scrine Foundation service users who are going to be made homeless due to their decision. There are vulnerable people living in the Open Centre, Guildford Lodge and the managed houses run by the Scrine who are desperately worried and unable to obtain any information from anybody about what is going to happen to them when the Foundation closes. Surely the responsibility of rehousing these people will fall to KCC since they are being made homeless through no faults of their own? Or, as has recently happened in another "charming cathedral city" (Cambridge) will they be given one way rail tickets to go and be homeless somewhere else KCC?????

I've done a lot work with the Scrine Foundation over the past year and have met some really dedicated people who are trying to provide the best possible service to some of the most vulnerable people across Kent.

It's a disgrace and the council should be ashamed of themselves if they force the charity to close. Is it any surprise that when you cut the funding as they did last year that there might be a struggle to maintain standards on reduced staff and resources?

And if the charity was to close, what are the plans for the service users, men, women and children who face living on the streets at threat of violence and abuse?

There is widespread support and understanding for the need of the shelter and the work that it does within the community and it will be the community who fight this.

The Book Palace at 32 Palace Street opened in 2002 and is still successfully bringing in funds for The Scrine Foundation. It has always been run by volunteers and I sincerely hope that the Charity will be able to continue its good work for vulnerable people in the area.
