Protesters form human chain around Kingsnorth power station

Watch the protest at Kinsgnorth.

More than a thousand people formed a human chain around Kingsnorth on Saturday to protest against plans for a new power station.

The campaigners, from a variety of groups and charities, joined hands to form a line around a section of the Hoo peninsula station.

Demonstrators dubbed the chain a 'Mili-band' after climate secretary Ed Miliband, who will be making the decision on the future of the power plant.

The owners of the plant, E.ON, want to build a new coal-fired plant at the site.

There were concerns the protest could become aggressive after Greenpeace campaigners boarded a coal-carrying ship bound for Kingsnorth less than two weeks ago.

But the main organisers, Oxfam, said the protest was always intended to be a peaceful one, and no arrests have been reported.

A fete was also held at the Hoo Village Institute with music, food, children's activities, live music and a rally after the main event.

I WAS THERE!!! I am 12 years old and I was at Kingsnorth yesterday. I think it is important for children to know what is happening and to take part. The event was great fun and very peaceful. It is my generation who will suffer and witness the horrible impact of climate change.
    ACT NOW!!!!! STOP CLIMATE CHAOS!!!

    Mili Band

It is time a Minister demonstrated a positive action to reduce carbon emission.

Will Mr Milliband be the one?

    Well done!

Well done everyone who engaged in the 'Miliband'. Let's hope Ed & the UK government see sense and invest in renewables and energy efficiency instead.

    Is Ed Miliband Listening?

I was sorry not to come to Kingsnorth. Though I now live in Manchester my sisters and Mother still live in Sevenoaks and i feel a sense of responsibility for what goes on in my old county.

I'm glad so many in Kent are taking this seriously (though perhaps your experience of flooding adds a dosset of self-interest!) and have to tell you that your leadership cheers us all around the country.

For people who like me missed the event and would like to find out more or to register their concern, can I suggest they visit: www.thebigif.org.uk ?
