Chinese lanterns cause distress call confusion

Chinese lanterns off the Kent coast sparked calls to the emergency services by worried onlookers.

Hundreds were released off Thanet on Saturday night and several people contacted the emergency services thinking they were distress calls from people in trouble at sea.

The Coastguard is urging those planning to release the lanterns to get in touch in advance to avoid wasting emergency resources.

Peter Legg, senior watch manager at Dover Coastguard, said: "To people who are not familiar with the coast then it would look as if it is somebody in distress.

"All of these things we have to investigate and sometimes we send out lifeboats, helicopters or aircraft if it is something we think more serious."

Lives could be put at risk if there happens to be real emergency elsewhere.

Mr Legg said the problem is becoming a regular occurrence. "It only started in the last couple of years - but this summer it appears to be more frequent, particularly in the last fortnight with the good weather we have had."

Dating back to the third century Century, Chinese lanterns are intended to bring good luck and prosperity.

    chinese laterns

i agree with the comments from the previous person(terrakill) ,but surely we cant be expected to tell all the emergency services we are going to release the laterns. even if we told the services dont you think they would be rather be spending there time dealing with crime and not taking calls from people wanting to remeber their loved ones? and what about the ballons that are released, arnt they a hazzard as well?what can we do to remeber our loved ones with out getting in trouble or causing a stir?

i think terra kill is right, for starter's if it was a distress call why would they be going out to sea? that's the silly'st thing i have eve heard! if it's that bad to send out gift's for the decesed then they simply should not be sold to the people of our nation, there is no advice given with such object's like these but there should be? why do they not come with warning's an safty advice? people just have to think before calling the athorities and makeing more work that is unnesasery! i mean we had a lttle fire half the size of me and somone called h fire brigade, i'm only 5 ft 8, what was the kneed? were in the middle of a thirty acre filed that's privratly owned, where was the danger?

    mmmm...

As someone who has, in the last few months, let off several sets of Chinese lanterns (Khom Fai) around the Isle I never gave it a thought... Distress rockets in general I believe are coloured (RED) and float gently down, whereas Khom Fai are yellow in colour when lit and do not descend until the flame has been extinguished.

Weather permitting I had planned setting more off this weekend, I'll have to consider whether to contact the Coastguard.
