Hundreds join Facebook campaign over lorry parking problem

Orbital Park lorries

More than 750 people have joined a Facebook group called 'HGV Lorries Parked on Monument Way South Willesborough Must Go'.

The group on the social networking website was created just over a fortnight ago.

Double yellow lines are due to be painted on the roads of Orbital Business Park in the hope they will prevent lorry drivers parking at the business park and encourage them to use the official truckstop nearby instead.

Huge trucks block the vision of drivers and rubbish, including human waste, often litters area.

    Lorry Parking problem

French "routiers" have specific designated parking in all rest areas and service stations up and down the country and also their own truck stops; all of them include showers and other services

    Lack of parking causes deaths

I can't condone the mess that some drivers leave (are there no bins nearby?) but in the USA they accommodate truckers at service areas with top class food and numerous working bathrooms and laundrettes, all reasonably priced, to ENCOURAGE trucks off the city streets.

On the continent there are decent places where lorries can stop and drivers can refreash themselves. Over here in the UK the services are ill equipped, often dirty and expensive. The areas for lorries are small so these fill quickly. In fact anyone visiting our motorway services could not fail to notice the poor quality and high cost. Bearing this in mind, where do people expect the drivers to go for their legally enforced breaks. I wish people would campaign for better stopping areas so this would not be a problem. We are just going to force lorry drivers to drive without breaks - and the resulting deaths will partly be on the hands of these campaigners. And no, I am not a lorry driver!!
