Revealed: the cost of high-speed rail travel!

Commuters will get a chance to try out the UK's first high speed rail service from June 29 - five months ahead of its official launch on December 13.

The 'preview' service will run between Ashford International, Ebbsfeet International and St Pancras from Monday to Friday.

As well as giving passengers a taste of what is to come and offering rail bosses feedback, it will also give Southeastern a chance to continue with testing, training and ensuring the service will run smoothly when it is fully introduced.

Southeastern says the highly anticipated 140mph service will offer passengers between Ashford International and London a journey time of 37 minutes and from Ebbsfleet International a time of just 17 minutes.

Charles Horton, Southeastern managing director said: "This is an extremely exciting time for the whole rail industry and we are pleased that we are able to provide this preview service six months early."

But there is a price to pay for this speedy service which the rail operator believes offers value for money.

For example, with a single ticket it will cost you £26.60 to get to London from Ashford International on High Speed 1 compared with £22.20 if you use the mainline.

Existing Southeastern ticket holders will be able to travel by paying a supplement and all first class ticket holders can travel on the high speed line at no extra cost.

Commuters from Ebbsfleet International will get more choice of when they can travel compared to Ashford’s commuters using this 'preview' service. Southeastern are offering up to four morning peak services to St Pancras International and six back during the evening peak hours. There will also be twice-hourly services operating during the day.

But if you want to try out High Speed 1 from further afield, the company is only offering up peak time travel six times a day to and from Ashford International.

Earlier this year Southeastern published its draft High Speed 1 timetable, which will see an extra 200 trains operating daily from December.

Crazy pricing I agree. In Germany for 34 Euro you can travel ALL of germany on a weekend only avoiding Intercity. Inter regional and other services allowed. I've crossed Germany many times using this ticket and generally with 3-4 changes you can cross 600km or so of land. That's value. BTW this ticket used to cost 25DM before the Euro and would allow upto 5 people to travel over a weekend in the country!

    People Power Using HS1

The only way to stop these silly fares is that if people boycott using Southeastern HS1 services until Government and Southeastern wake up and realise these fares are unreasonable. Eurostar offer cheap and discounted tickets using HS1 to europe, so please explain why local people have to pay more. Also no one at the Company has so far explained if tickets such as London Travelcards and Railcards can be used on the new services on HS1. The only time l will use the new Javlin trains will be on the "Classic lines" where the cheaper fares are.

    High Speed Train

Without seeming to "rain on certain ministers' parade" I'm afraid I must agree with all the above! Just who is going to "commute" to St Pancras!?
I feel that as the majority of people who live in Kent travel to Victoria,Charing Cross and Cannon Street, the service is neither use nor ornament.Although you save time travelling into the Capital on the HST,you will probably lose it the other end travelling across London(tube, bus taxi)just to get to work on time!
Not to mention the money as well!
Maybe this was just another cunning plan by the Government for some extra revenue!
As a matter of interest, why didnt they just run the trains into Waterloo, like the Eurostars used to? Would that have not been easier?
What has happened to Waterloo,by the way?

I also go to Cannon Street, I work in the city. Why on earth would I go all the way over to St Pancras when from Sittingbourne the HST takes 1 minute extra and then 20 plus minutes tube journey.

No thought as gone in to this at all.

    Draft timetable

Same problems going into Charing Cross - peak services have been reduced and the trains we do get will have already called at many stations beforehand which will mean they'll be full by the time they get to us...

I'm in a similar position to Chris, but going into Victoria. Looking at the "draft" timetable many services during the peak have been slashed and more stops put in. It used to take an hour to get to Victoria from Sittingbourne, but from December looks like an hour and ten minutes. Quite frankly, I'm dreading December!

I notice the SER make glowing refernce about this services. However as a regular commuter to Cannon Street this service adds no benefit. Looking at SER drafht timetable to Cannon Street they withdrawing some of my services which are heavily over crowded and increasing the number of stops and Journey times. I 'am sure thousands of passengers who comute to St Pancras (which I've yet to come across) every day are delighted. However the Bulk of SER existing passengers are going to suffer as consequence of the introdution of HS1.
